Kailash tour via Simikot – Hilsa trek is one of the favorite ones for those intrepid and daunting trekkers who are in search of a virgin and chanlleging trekking route. It is, in fact, a tour to Mt Kailash and Mansarovar with Simikot-Hilsa trek. Among all trekking routes in Nepal, trekking from Simikot to Hilsa (7 days) route is relatively less explored area as it is highly remote with topographically difficult terrain. In terms of infrastructure in this route, there are no tea houses at all. The trek has to be fully organized along with the full Sherpa support. However, the unique people, culture & life style on the rugged landscape compensate the hassles making this 7 day trek on the Nepal part en route to Mt Kailash highly memorable and rewarding.
One time Mt Kailash was completely inaccessible. However, these days, Mt Kailash can be reached from four routes. The first one is the overland route through the nearest newly opened border point between Nepal and Tibet: Kerung; the 2nd one is both way by flight from Kathmandu to Lhasa and back and and the third is via Simikot with a bit strenuous trekking of 6-7 days or a 20 minute helicopter flight from Simikot to Hilsa. The last route is by flights from Kathandu - Lhasa – Ali – Kailash and back. With no surprise, the trekking lovers prefer the 3rd option as the route is still almost virgin and serene, while the high end people like the last option by flights.
In this context, obviously, it is more expensive than other trekking routes. It is more expensive not only because of its difficult terrain, but also because once the trekkers enter Tibet via Hilsa and Sher on their way to Mt Kailash, all the Nepali support staff do not have any role to play in Tibet at all. They all have to return the same way back to Simikot and Kathmandu along with all equipments and enough food support till they reach back to Simikot. This is how an extra cost is added.
In Tibet side, the road is excellent and the basic guest houses on the Kailash side with food facility are easily available at every overnight spot. Even in the 53 km Kailash circuit (kora) route where every visitor is required to walk for 2½ days, basic tented guest houses with food facility are easily available. Also, at the end of the tour in Nepal side called Kerung, there are good hotels and guest houses.

Note:
